This sutra was requested by the bodhisattva Akashagarbha. Akashagarbha asked the Buddha four questions on how a bodhisattva copes with the transition - death. In his answer, the Buddha summarised the five indispensable key points that a bodhisattva must cultivate and master before he reaches beyond suffering. These five points - impermanence, great compassion, freedom from reference points, non-existence and Buddhahood - are universally relevant for every Buddhist on the path of Mahayana and Vajrayana.

 

The sutra is the root of the sutras of the Buddha's third teaching cycle, in which he directly conveyed the absolute reality, the definitive meaning.

 

You can find translations of the sutra in german and english, and there are commentaries by Shantideva and Prajnasamuda.
