The Steps of Meditation - Calm and Discernment, Part 2

Monday, July 04 – Friday, July 22 2022

by Khenpo Chödrag Tenphel Rinpoche

The practice of mental calm allows the mind to be aware, present to itself, in a state of non-distraction; that of profound vision allows one to clearly discern the nature of phenomena. This is how the Buddha presents meditation practice.

A variety of progressive teachings explain the purpose of meditation and its benefits, the different methods and ways to apply them. Meditating relies on knowing these instructions well and contemplating them in order to acquire a profound understanding. The certainty obtained allows for the application of these methods; combined with study and reflection, meditation becomes a progressive path. One can thus cultivate calm and clarity of mind.

Khenpo Rinpoche will explain the conditions necessary to unite in order to train in fruitful practice. He bases his teaching on the first two sections of the eighth volume of The Treasury of Knowledge, the great encyclopedia of Jamgön Kongtrül Lodrö Thaye (1812–1900 C.E.). You can find the English translation of this text section here.

You can ask questions about teaching by emailing them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ; Khenpo Rinpoche will answer selected questions in a weekly question-and-answer session.

In general, when we physically attend this type of teaching, we take part in course fees that cover the expenses the center incurs to make Dharma transmission possible. In light of the current circumstances and the transmission via Youtube intended for the greatest number of people possible, these teachings will be open-access and free of charge.

In order to expand this generosity further—according to Khenpo Chodrak Rinpoche’s wishes—you may make a donation to the French humanitarian association Knowledge Rising, which is active in Nepal at Sharminub, Shamar Rinpoche’s large humanitarian, educational monastic center.
